My RICHest Summer Yet!!!

Uncategorized No Comments

My last and final internship took place during the Summer between my Junior and Senior year. I spent the summer interning at Rich’s Products. For those of you who don’t know Rich’s Products is headquartered right here in Buffalo!

My internship, which was in the Communications Group, was not only fun, but a great learning experience. During my internship, I actually got to work on things that really mattered, which was a huge change from any other internshp experience. Much of my work was centered around writing press releases, writing feature stories that were posted on Rich’s Intranet, planning and executing events, taking photos, and attending meetings.

One of my favorite experiences at Rich’s was attending the Fort Erie plant and watching products being made, baked, and packed into boxes right before my eyes, just like factories on tv. I had no idea that something like this existed so close to Buffalo. Sampling some of Rich’s products also was a pretty tasty experience. (If you ever get a chance, try their Cheesecake, you won’t be sorry)!

When I wasn’t sampling the delicious foods, I was learning how to improve my writing. I learned to take my time and really develop my ideas, rather than just rushing to get done. My supervisor and Communication Specialist Lisa Texido always says “Writing is a group effort”. She was definitely right. Sometimes, someone else sees something that can be improved upon, and it’s not that they are trying to rip your work apart, but rather help you. Thats, exactly what Lisa Texido did. I accepted her constructive criticism and tried my hardest to improve my work.

All in all, my internship experience at Rich’s was by far the best. Rich’s was voted one of Western New Yorks best companies to work for in 2007 and really it is no surprise. Rich’s treats their employees (and interns) very well. I was treated with the upmost respect and kindess throughout my internship. All the employees that I came into contact with were eager to offer advice, answer questions, and help out with any project that I was working on.

My internship at Rich’s reinforced my decision to persue a career in public relations. If an internship with Rich’s Products Communication Group is something you are interested in, contact Lisa Texido at 878-8085.

Stressed About Finding A Job?

Uncategorized Comments Off

I sure am!!! When I’m not in class and not working my minimum wage job, it seems that the only thing I can think about is finding a career. But I don’t want just any career. I want a job doing what I love. I want a job in public relations and it seems I’m having zero luck. I decided to check out Medaille’s Career Planning tab on the website. Much to my dismay, there is nothing in my chosen area. All is not lost however. I found a great link that actually got my mind working a little bit more.

I’ve been stumped looking for places to apply to for a job in PR. Sure there is your typical PR firms, local companies, colleges, charities, and not for profit organizations. There is a great link that answers the question “What Can I Do With A Degree In Communication?”

Well this got my mind working a little bit more. I started thinking outside the box for places to apply to. Have I found somethint yet? No. But I do feel a little bit better and not so stressed. Well back to the job hunt!!

A Summer in the Life of….. A PROMOTIONS EMPLOYEE

Uncategorized Comments Off

The summer of my Sophomore year at Medaille I decided to pursue an internship in media promotions. A friend of mine worked at Citadel Broadcasting, which owns and operates 103.3 The Edge, Mix 104.1 and 97 Rock. I applied for an internship but I ended up getting hired on the spot, for a part time job. Working at Citadel was one of the best part time jobs that I could ever imagine.

As a promotions employee at Citadel, I was required to work station events, concerts, and DJ Appearances. Working an event required set up of prizes and a prize wheel or contest. During the event, I was required to get people to come spin the prize wheel to win  a prize, sign up to win cool items, or just to come talk to me, to see just how cool Citadel really is!

During my time at Citadel, I learned a lot. I learned how to come out of my shell a bit. To be a promotions employee you have to be very outgoing and you have to be able to talk to complete strangers. That was something I was good at. I also learned how to think on my feet. Often times, things don’t go as planned, that with anything. While working at Citadel, sometimes things got crazy, and I had to improvise and remain calm in order to keep things running smoothly.

Along with meeting the personalities of each station, I also got to meet some really cool people. I worked the Edge Fest and got to meet Amy Lee, Korn, and Hell Yeah!! I worked numerous events with Bills players and Sabres players present as well.

Another cool thing about working at Citadel, was watching everyday people actually win cool prizes. Two of the best prizes that I witnessed being won were  a brand new car and tickets to The Ice Bowl. It’s not everyday where you get to work at a cool job and make others happy too.

The only down side to working at Citadel is that in order to drive the station vehicle, employees have to be 21 years old. A lot of events require only 1 employee who can drive, so if you arent 21, you really dont get to work too much. During the summer, I had a packed schedual working everything from bison’s game, the Erie County Fair and even the Taste of Buffalo. Once summer ended, there really wasn’t much work for me, other than on weekends, since I wasn’t 21 years old.

All in all, my time at Citadel was a lot of fun and very worthwile for me. I learned a lot about promotions and radio in general and I had fun doing so. Not many part time jobs can actually be that cool!!

Still Looking To Get Involved On Campus?

How about WMCB? WMCB is the Medaille College Radio Station also known as WMCB The Lizzard. The Campus Radio Station is run by students with the direction of Lisa VanValkinburgh and Lou Pozantides. Students serve as the radio station DJ’s. There are currenly many open on air slots in desperate need of being filled. Possible show ideas include but are not limited to  music, sports, talk shows,  and news shows.

If you aren’t in to on-air stuff, maybe promotions is your thing. The promotions team is always looking for help with station events, hanging flyers and gettting sponsorship.

Although these are unpaid positions, they look great on resumes. Employers look for job experience when hiring, and WMCB would be the perfect addition to any resume.

Did I mention that WMCB is the only club with its own lounge? Interested in being a part of WMCB? Stop by the radio station at M010.

A Summer In The Life Of A…. NEWS REPORTER

Internships and Job Opportunities No Comments

The summer after my freshman year I began a summer internship at WKBW-TV , also know as Channel 7. I started attending Medaille with the idea that I wanted to be a news reporter, and channel 7 semmed like a great place to start.  After interning at Channel 7 for the summer, I soon realized that being a news reporter was definitely not for me. If I hadn’t completed my internship at Channel 7, I would have no idea what its like to be a news reporter. Even though I didn’t want to be a news reporter, I still feel that it was a great learning experience for me and I am glad I had the opportunity to do it.

My internship was in the news department, so for most of the day I sat at the assignment desk, with the assignment editor. I got to answer phone calls when they came in, being as polite and professional as possible (which is pretty hard when people call up with the dumbest questions). Calls that were of great interest I had to write down contact information, so that if a reporter was interested in doing a story, they would be able to get ahold of them.

Another part of my internship in the news room involved inputting press releases into the computer system.  Press releases would fly out of the fax machine like crazy. It was my job to include all pertinent information (WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and WHO) and add it to a calendar on the computer so when the date of the event neared, it would pop right up.

When I wasn’t in the news room, I got to learn a lot about the field. I travelled with both reporters and camera men to get the information about a story that was needed. My all time favorite news story was one that involved a trip to Cirque Niagara, in which I was able to meet the acrobats and pet the horses!

Now, you are probably thinking to yourself, ” Is she crazy? It sounds like fun to be a news reporter”. I am sure it is, but just not for me. Going into my internship, I thought of news reporters as glamorous, but I never realized how much work they have to do. Am I afraid of a little hard work? No way! I am a firm  believer in working hard for something that you are passionate about.  I personally want a job with more “normal” hours, because getting up at 2 am, really won’t go over too well with me. That’t not the only reason why I decided not to be a news reporter. Being a news reporter seemed like a much too serious job for me. I want a job that I can have fun with and show off my dynamic personality.
