You can say the F-word on the radio?

Radio and TV Broadcasting, Student Views No Comments

I was driving into Medaille on Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m. and I turned on the radio and landed on Z 101.1. A song came on the air and it was “It’s been a while” by Staind and I knew it had the F-word and the S-word in it and I figured that they would play the edited version but when they played the unedited version instead it just through me for a loop. I have never heard either word on the radio in my life.

Z101.1 is a station that is broadcast out of Canada, a country that does not have the FCC, but it is also broadcast out of the United sates as well and we have rules about such words on the air. When I put on the radio I expect certain things and I don’t know how well this will sit with me. I will probably forget about it in a few days but I am just thinking about the children that hear these words on the radio and imitate their favorite bands or celebrities.

Just because you may be able to get away with something , doesn’t make it right.

TONIGHT!!!!!

The Student Activities Board, Student Involvement Center, and the Counseling Center will be sponsoring a Take Back the Night Event, titled, “You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk”, an event speaking out against violence toward women and others. A recent graduate of Medaille will speak of her own journey and message of hope at 7pm in the lecture hall. We will then walk around the circle in support of survivors of sexual violence. You are invited to join us. Please do not hesitate to contact Jennine Suk at 880-2339 if you have any further questions about the event.
