Project Green Light is a group of concerned citizens, educators, and students that is focused on improving the recycling effort in the WNY region. The group was initiated by Dr. Stephanie Westerman and consists of several Medaille College members including Dr. Brenda Fredette, Dr. Norm Muir, Kerry Spicer, undergraduate students Corey Biesinger, Chris Devlin, Margaret Keddie, Ashley Kosicky, Lauren Neubauer, Brenna Barbour, and Liz Probst along with graduate students Sarah Sears and Rachel Karasiewicz.  Additional members include Dave Bauer of Sustainable Earth Solutions, Erie County recycling coordinator Gary Carrell, and concerned citizen Patrick Ingrassia.

Their mission is to promote green initiatives at area campuses in Western New York, with the ultimate goal of changing government policy and creating a culture of environmental responsibility on college campuses.

Project Green Light will bring  teams of 3-5 students from 17 regional colleges and universities together  in a Student Leadership Symposium, to investigate a recycling challenge they face in their school. One of the goals of the Student Leadership Symposium is to help Student Leaders make real and lasting changes in their campus communities as well as the Western New York region.

The Symposium will be held from 8am to 4 pm on Saturday October 25th, 2008 in Medaille’s Lecture Hall.

My RICHest Summer Yet!!!

Uncategorized No Comments

My last and final internship took place during the Summer between my Junior and Senior year. I spent the summer interning at Rich’s Products. For those of you who don’t know Rich’s Products is headquartered right here in Buffalo!

My internship, which was in the Communications Group, was not only fun, but a great learning experience. During my internship, I actually got to work on things that really mattered, which was a huge change from any other internshp experience. Much of my work was centered around writing press releases, writing feature stories that were posted on Rich’s Intranet, planning and executing events, taking photos, and attending meetings.

One of my favorite experiences at Rich’s was attending the Fort Erie plant and watching products being made, baked, and packed into boxes right before my eyes, just like factories on tv. I had no idea that something like this existed so close to Buffalo. Sampling some of Rich’s products also was a pretty tasty experience. (If you ever get a chance, try their Cheesecake, you won’t be sorry)!

When I wasn’t sampling the delicious foods, I was learning how to improve my writing. I learned to take my time and really develop my ideas, rather than just rushing to get done. My supervisor and Communication Specialist Lisa Texido always says “Writing is a group effort”. She was definitely right. Sometimes, someone else sees something that can be improved upon, and it’s not that they are trying to rip your work apart, but rather help you. Thats, exactly what Lisa Texido did. I accepted her constructive criticism and tried my hardest to improve my work.

All in all, my internship experience at Rich’s was by far the best. Rich’s was voted one of Western New Yorks best companies to work for in 2007 and really it is no surprise. Rich’s treats their employees (and interns) very well. I was treated with the upmost respect and kindess throughout my internship. All the employees that I came into contact with were eager to offer advice, answer questions, and help out with any project that I was working on.

My internship at Rich’s reinforced my decision to persue a career in public relations. If an internship with Rich’s Products Communication Group is something you are interested in, contact Lisa Texido at 878-8085.

Stressed About Finding A Job?

Uncategorized Comments Off

I sure am!!! When I’m not in class and not working my minimum wage job, it seems that the only thing I can think about is finding a career. But I don’t want just any career. I want a job doing what I love. I want a job in public relations and it seems I’m having zero luck. I decided to check out Medaille’s Career Planning tab on the website. Much to my dismay, there is nothing in my chosen area. All is not lost however. I found a great link that actually got my mind working a little bit more.

I’ve been stumped looking for places to apply to for a job in PR. Sure there is your typical PR firms, local companies, colleges, charities, and not for profit organizations. There is a great link that answers the question “What Can I Do With A Degree In Communication?”

Well this got my mind working a little bit more. I started thinking outside the box for places to apply to. Have I found somethint yet? No. But I do feel a little bit better and not so stressed. Well back to the job hunt!!
